Time Warner rate hike?
My Time Warner bill for my Inter- net service this month is higher by about 4 dollars than it has been for the last several years. I received no notice prior to this that my monthly fee was being raised. When I call Cus- tomer Service, the helpful and friendly automated voice system disconnects me as soon as I try to reach a live operator. Anyone have any insight about any of this? Soup kitchen for Christmas?
Since I'll be in Austin far away from family for the holidays this year, I wanted to volunteer at a soup kitchen or something similar for Christmas Day. I sent an email to Angel House and got no response, anyone know of a place that needs an extra pair of hands and a willing heart this year? South or Central preferred, only because of the limited bus schedule on Christmas. Current Mood: cheerful |

Doctor question
So I know that a foot doctor is a podiatrist, but what is a hand doctor? And does anyone here have any recommendations for a good hand doctor? I've developed a little knot on the bones that constitute the joint of my ring finger where it meets my hand, palm side, and it HURTS when it gets cold, even to grip the steering wheel. Help!, and thanks in advance! |

Should Neil Gaiman come back to DragonCon?
Last night I went to Neil Gaiman's reading and signing at Decatur GA held at Agnes Scott College organized by Little Shop of Stories. There were about 1,000 of us there and he signed for everyone all night, till after 1AM. It was so great to see him here again, the last I saw him was at DragonCon in 2000. One of the most interesting things occurred during the Q&A, when he answered the question of why he hasn't been back to DragonCon since. He told us that he used to enjoy going to DragonCon in the early 90's, but the last time he attended in 2000 it was not organized well for his appearance. He was told to go up to his room and wait for someone to come get him in a few hours for some activity. When he asked why he couldn't go his own way for a few hours instead of going to his room and doing nothing, he was told "No", he had to stay in his room. Hours had passed, and he asked if they were ready, and (I believe) was told that the activity had passed and someone forgot to get him. He also mentioned that he was presented with a lifetime achievement award, except for the fact that the award was not ready in time for the con and showed up in the mail a few months later. He wasn't mad about the award, pretty sure just about waiting in his room. He said whenever he is asked if he wants to come back, he still remembers having to sit in his room. So, take note here, he hasn't been back for 9 years now because of that. Do you want to have Neil Gamain come back to DragonCon? Maybe DragonCon organizers need to tell him he can make his own schedule and work around what he wants. I know there is a lot going on, but if you give him the freedom to do what he wants, when he wants to, maybe he might come back. Just something to think about. |

Baseball cards?
I'm trying to buy baseball cards for my little brother for Christmas. I have names of players he wants, but I know absolutely nothing about baseball cards. I know a little about collecting cards (pokemon, mtg, etc) but not sports ones. What's a store around Austin that sells baseball cards, would be willing to help me find the people I'm looking for, and won't try to sell me overpriced crap cards just because I don't know their worth? I'd prefer up north or central, but I'll go south if there's no other option. |

D*C regular Don Maitz
Don Maitz has been a regular fixture in Dragon*con's artist alley for as long as I've been attending. I recently had a chance to interview him, and I thought the D*C community might be interested in it. He talked about his early convention experiences as a fan, and then as a vendor. He also discusses why he loves painting pirates, and why learning a bit about copyright law is important for aspiring artists. Link: An Interview with Hugo Award Winning Fantasy Artist Don Maitz. If you haven't had a chance to see him at Dragon*cons past, definitely stop by the artist alley and say "hello." Don is one of my favorite regular D*C guests. (And if you buy one of his calendar's, he'll usually do a little sketch just for you in the back!) |

Classic Soft Trim
Hi all- Has anyone here used Classic Soft Trim to install heated seats on a car? I'm considering using them to add heated seats to my boyfriend's car for Christmas, but I don't want to use them if someone has had a horrible experience with them. His car is a fairly expensive kind with very expensive parts, so I'm ridiculously nervous about doing anything that might end badly, since I can't afford repairs (hell, I can hardly afford this!). Anyone? |

confused :S
i feel silly for asking, but i'm from a small town so it's at least understandable (i hope).... but..... i have NEVER ridden a city bus before. I plan on going to the trail of lights with my SO, my mom, and her husband on the last day of the festival (a monday, so i plan to park at a metered spot). I want us to take the bus from whereever we park to zilker park. anyway.... on both here https://www.ci.austin.tx.us/tol/parking.htmand here http://www.capmetro.org/zilkertree/it says that bus stops are located along barton springs road. on the map, however, it shows it running up congress and around the capitol as well. if i were to park around there, would that mean i'd have to take two buses just to get there? (something i do not want to do) |

Shiny and New. I'm bright, shiny, and new to Austin, TX. In need of friends, contacts, people to network with. I love this city, it has so much to offer, but enjoying it alone isn't enjoying it at all. Just posting to say hello. Edited by REQUEST: I'm eighteen, I work for general motors. I collect high heels. I read quite a bit. I believe it or not just came out of a long and intense relationship which caused me to move out to Austin. I am currently very new to this city and I love the way it makes me feel when I walk down town at night. I love horror and indie films.
A little more info about me there. |

Locket/Tiny Container for Ashes
My father passed away recently, and we had him cremated, so I'm wondering where I could find some sort of small locket or other container-type jewelry that we could keep some of his ashes in. I know my Mom would really like something like that. Any suggestions? I work at Nomadic Notions, and I already know we don't have anything like that there, so I'm open to other options. Thanks. |

missing cat - hyde park area
Hey all, This is a long shot but who knows what could happen :-) My cat Bill snuck out the door last night (I live on Avenue H near Daily Juice) and hasn't returned. He's a shorthair, white w/brown & black splotches, and weighs about 10 pounds. He does not have a collar but he is microchipped. If you or someone you know happen to find him, please comment here or give me a call at 350-5107. Thanks in advance :-) |

Ginger People Ginger Preserves?
Has anyone seen ginger preserves made by a company called Ginger People around town? If so, where did you see it? Whole Foods at Gateway used to carry it but no longer does. I'm really looking for this specific brand but I'm willing to take recommendations for other brands, particularly if you can tell me where I can find them. I'm really only looking for ginger preserves, though, not for ginger-and-X preserves. Thank you! Anyone...? |
